Lead Medicinal Chemistry Team and Management

Our drug discovery campaign is conducted in collaboration with the University of Western Australia

A/Prof. Scott Stewart

Scott is an Associate Professor of Chemistry in UWA’s School of Molecular Sciences with decades of experience in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry research. Following undergraduate studies at Deakin University, Scott completed his PhD at ANU under Prof. Martin Banwell on the development of efficient new synthetic routes to structurally complex natural products with anti- cancer activity. His awards include the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Award and the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt and Kyoto University Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowships. Currently his group conducts cutting-edge research at the interface of organic synthesis, catalysis and reaction development, and medicinal chemistry, with findings from each discipline often overlapping synergistically.

Dr. Mike Nutt

After graduating with a BSc(hons) double major in Chemistry and Pharmacology from the University of Western Australia in 2018, Mike completed his PhD in 2022 at UWA under the supervision of A/Prof Scott Stewart. Mike’s PhD studies involved reengineering thalidomide as a scaffold to drive development of novel, highly selective liver cancer therapeutics. He has a wealth of experience in early preclinical drug design, including leveraging statistical analysis and computational modelling of drug-protein interactions for structural optimisation. He presently serves as team leader underneath A/Prof. Stewart for management of the psychedelics research team, which also includes PhD student Sam Allen and honours student Michael Schneider.

Matt Hayne
